3 cups mashed sweet potatoes 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 stick melted butter 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Topping 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1 cup coconut 1/3 stick melted butter Combine first six ingredients and place in baking dish.  By CANDICE GRIMM: November 19, 2005 GATLINBURG - The awarding of a contract to build a new science and education center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was announced Friday. Park Superintendent Dale Ditmanson announced the $4.5 million contract for the new Twin Creeks Science and Education Center at the Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains Park Commission meeting.  Equipping and furnishing of the center will bring the total cost to about $4.85 million. Groundbreaking on the center, which will be located just off Cherokee Orchard Road, is expected within a month and completion is expected by late spring of 2007. The Mountain Press

GATLINBURG - The fourth annual Heritage Arts & Crafts Days (formerly Heritage on Display) will run through Labor Day, Sept. 5.

Featured during Heritage Arts & Crafts Days are special demonstrations, tours of historic places, artist appearances, live music, and storytelling. More than 90 shops, restaurants, and family-owned businesses are on the Glades loop, which is located just outside downtown Gatlinburg. The area is the only zoned craft community in the United States. Among the demonstrations visitors may see are painting, candy making, quilting, weaving, broom making, candle dipping and pottery making. Most demonstrations will take place daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Live bluegrass and mountain music concerts will be held each day of the event by different performers in the arts and crafts community. Storytellers Mike and Kathy Gwinn will tell tales about Dolly Parton, Wiley Oakley, the formation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Cherokee stories and legends.
